Design, processing

The idea of the Galaxy S3 has divided fans and press: The majority was satisfied and celebrated the machine as a worthy successor to the Galaxy S2, a significant number complained but a lack of technical innovation, the material chosen by the manufacturer and the design of the new device. Who is right? This can be as often as not clearly explain, because the design is just a matter of taste and flavor can be known, excellent fight.

But the fact is that Samsung has skimped at all the material, because of cheap plastic, the plastic used to do nothing. Instead, the producers turned right a few weeks ago that the housing of the Galaxy S3 consists of high quality polycarbonate – a material that is used in everyday life such as in motorcycle helmets, or even in aviation. The reason for this choice of material quickly becomes clear: It does not interfere with radio communications, is lightweight and up to 300 times stronger and more scratch resistant than conventional plastic. In fact, it feels Galaxy S3 also significantly high as its predecessor, which was often blamed for the slightly cheap-looking plastic back. The impression is of higher quality in the new model not only the material but also on other factors.

Due to its round shape and smooth the Galaxy S3 is in spite of the increased dimensions (136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6 x 66.1 x 125.3 mm instead of 8.5 millimeters at the Galaxy S2) is excellent in the hand. It also slight increase weight (133 grams instead of 116 grams in the Galaxy S2) gives the impression of a solid and high quality smartphone and perhaps a bit too slippery, but the fact flatters while almost soft-feel plastics combined downright with the surprisingly flat design the hand. Unlike its predecessor, the new Galaxy S3 way through the same thin, the Galaxy S2 was still at the bottom of a thickening – but that did not really see in the Galaxy S3 but still a bit finer. Although the complete back consists of a single plastic part, but it can be anywhere push, but sits perfectly and without air in the enclosure. One of a HTC X or even an iPhone 4 (S) Samsung is approaching but not quite yet, the two models look even more like a unified whole.

Nevertheless, it is just really disappointed when the Samsung Galaxy S3 is the battery cover withdrawn from the housing to replace the battery to switch microSD or Micro-SIM. Then memories of the previous Galaxy S2 awake, where you break the back cover from the rest of the smartphone more than just simply had to solve. After all, look the little plastic tabs that keep the lid with a tight grip on the housing, not as fragile as before and from experience with Galaxy and Galaxy S2, we now know that the cover of the Galaxy-S series are the same as stable and flexible that no one really needs to be afraid to break them when opened. But knowledge and faith are still two different things, so should Neukäufern drive the first opening of its € 600 racers still the sweat on his forehead.

On the rest of the build quality is unique to overly strict standards to complain about something. Thus, the front and rear Lausprechergrating Chrome-look is not one hundred percent accurate in their use of plastic and openings in the tiny gap between the rotating frame and display enclosure could theoretically collect dust. But that’s in the previous test days did not happen and the hint of leaning speaker grille should notice only pedants. Overall, therefore, convinced the Galaxy S3 fully the issue of quality of workmanship.

A word about design, and Mark of Galaxy S3: The model works in reality much more noble than in photographs, because the quality of the Samsung Galaxy S3 can be not only a sense – sight – recognize, but can also be felt. Which of the two color schemes (dark blue or white) looks better, is again a matter of taste.

Some design elements of its predecessor have been taken. Thus, Samsung held at the Galaxy S3 to hardware buttons below the display and you can find again the mechanical home button. Right and left of it are touch sensitive touch keys for menu and back function appropriate to the duration of illumination can be calibrated in the settings. Since Samsung as well as HTC has actually removed as a software keyboard controls designed with its own surface, this interpretation even offers an advantage: more space on the display.

Display

Also the display of the Galaxy S3 has been criticized in the run. For unlike the previous model, the manufacturer uses only the new flagship super-AMOLED-Plus without the additive and thus a Pentile matrix. Which provides in comparison to RGB matrix by a lower number of subpixels that point a light grid is visible and strong contrast frayed borders and font slightly – in short, reduces the image sharpness. In fact, it is the huge 4.8-inch touchscreen of the Samsung Galaxy S3 hardly see anything because of the high resolution pixels 1.280×720 prevents an obvious Aufpixelung. Only when the unit is very tight stops in front of the eyes, the described disadvantages can be seen – but who does that?

Instead, convinced the Samsung S3 with the Galaxy can be adjusted in four stages at the request saturated colors, their intensity, and good readability even at sharp angles. The brightness of the Galaxy S3 displays is sufficient, such as a Sony Xperia best values P with his White Magic Screen gives it, however. In everyday life, disturbed the somewhat lower luminosity than my S2 Galaxy (the other was about as bright) in the test as with almost all phones but only in direct sunlight. The automatic brightness adjustment is obviously to help save electricity and is our taste for a bit too dark.
